Primary Two

Pirates

We start Primary 2 by sailing off on a pirate adventure! We find out about real pirate life and design our own treasure maps, telescopes and flags before embarking on our seaside walk.

Toys

We explore a range of old and new toys. We learn how to make comparisons between them. To finish this topic, the children take part in a practical workshop which is led by a Victorian Nanny.

Fairytales

Next, we enter the magical world of Fairytales and explore the characters, plot and settings of well-known stories. The children learn to sequence, retell and begin to write creatively. This topic provides the children with lots of opportunities to take on a role when performing scenes from these stories.

Under the Sea

Then we journey under the sea! We discover lots of factual information about sea creatures, from blue whales to zooplankton and use it in report writing. During this topic, we create beautiful artwork and set up our own Fishmongers in the classroom.

The Tiny Seed

We use the book ‘The Tiny Seed’ as an introduction to exploring our natural environment. We spend lots of time in our school garden and investigate the conditions plants need to grow. We grow our own plants and taste a range of fruit and vegetables. During this topic we go on a class trip to Mount Stewart where we discover the wide range of plants and trees.

Julia Donaldson

We end the year exploring a wide range of popular Julia Donaldson stories, including Zog, Room on the Broom, Stick Man and A Squash and a Squeeze. The children love bringing in their own favourite Julia Donaldson books during this topic and acting out parts of the story.
